Fall always seemed like the best time of the year. The heat of summer disappeared and the pumpkins came out on display. When the leaves started turning colors everything looked festive. As a boy I always stole into the movies to watch the old horror flicks that scared the liver out of me, but I kept coming back. Actually, I knew Dracula lives in my closet and I needed a reprieve.
I found that I could push the scary nonsense away by walking up the valley and watching Deer Creek go bubbling and tumbling down the mountainside. Nature reminded me that the monsters in the movies stayed in the movies. The autumn beauty was the real reality. Sitting by the stream rushing down the slope always made the Fall even better.
Robert L. Wise went to college for art and is an archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches and director of the Office of Ecumenical Relations. He has been awarded the title of Apostolic Representative for Christian Unity by Pope Francis. In addition to his work in ecumenism, Wise is the author of over thirty-four books and many articles published in several languages. Wise also publishes under the pseudonyms Spencer E. Moses and Ed Moses.
